Yes, I am so fortunate that I actually have two families. My biological family and my German friends, whom I consider to be my second family. I have spent months together with the Germans, both in Sweden and in Germany. We have seen each other in all seasons of the year and in all stages of life. We have taught each other our different languages and customs. We have been together in everyday life and on vacation. We have cooked together, listened to music, sung, traveled, and stayed at home together. I have been a babysitter, played with, and watched a wonderful person grow up; she feels like my niece. I love them because they have always welcomed me with open arms, even during life’s difficult moments. They have taught me that a family doesn’t have to be biological to exist. They have taught me to relax with a good beer, and I have shared Christmas cheer and baked with them. I am so grateful that they are in my life. I miss them tremendously when I’m not with them. It’s been far too long since we last met.
